Tweening

If you would like to be advised when new files are added email me, gasonmark@gmail.com, put "tweening files" in the subject line.

Using TweenLite/Max and TimelineLite/Max

resources from my presentation at Flashmn, Jan-20-2010

Some post presentation thoughts

Hi to anyone who was at the presentation.

As I said I will be posting the files from the presentation and more over the next few days. I will take some time to comment the code as well as possible. I will also slowly add more substantial practical files, such as a simple xml driven photo gallery with thumbnails which uses TweenMax.

If you would like to be advised when new files are added email me, gasonmark@gmail.com, put "tweening files" in the subject line.

I am planning on starting a blog soon on actionscript, geared to the designer endeavouring to teach themselves as opposed to the computer science graduate. If you would like to know when that is online email me with "blog" in the subject line

If you just need help email me and I will do my best. We hope to see you all at meetings in the future.

If anyone is interested in a full day of one on one training to get them up to speed on Tweening I can do that at a very reasonable rate. A small group would be possible too.

A few things I forgot to mention

As always after the presentation a few things I should have mentioned immediately popped into my head. So here they are.

1. You can do 99% of what I showed with what you get for free in the basic download. By joining club greensock you get some extras. There are in fact 3 levels of membership, $25, $50, $99. $25 will get you everything I demonstrated. I still recommend the $99. See the Club page for a comparison of what you get for your money http://blog.greensock.com/club/

2. remember you can tween ANY Numeric property. So although I spent a lot of time moving boring squares around the stage, you could also tween the volume of a mp3. You could tween the pitch of a sound, if you used a nice custom ease in and out and yoyo'd it, you would have a quick and easy sine wave. I will post examples in the future.

3. Photos have many properties you can tween, see the ColorMatrixFilter and ColorTransform plugins, play with them in the plugins widget http://blog.greensock.com/get-started-tweening/#plugins

4. quite a few of the online widgets actually come in the download, so you can use them to create code for you without being connected to the internet.

5. For the more advanced, if you create your own object/class by say extending sprite and give it a numeric property tweenMax will tween that. There is an example in the files.

6. I was asked about changing values for a property during a tween. My answer was not very clear. You can do this for any property if you use the DynamicProps plugin, which is I am afraid one of the 4 plugins that only comes with paid membership, but it is in the $25 package.

7. TimelineMax allows you to dynamically change the speed of your Timeline Tween groups, so you have the power to fast forward, rewind or slow motion a flash movie. Please take 30 minutes to watch the TimelineMax demo movie, it will all make sense.

8. someone asked would it be possible to use the SVG data from applications like Illustrator. SVG is a format you can save to which has all the numeric data to describe the lines and curves etc in a vector graphic. It is an intriguing idea to use this with Tweenmax, I will be experimenting and will post any files if I succeed.

Picking a version, to pay or not to pay.

Most things can be done with the free classes, do consider making a donation. Joining Club Greensock does get you some cool extra tweening plugins and some cool extra classes that are not directly tweening related. Compare features here http://blog.greensock.com/features/

some of the club Greensock benefits

      1. motionBlur plugin
      2. physics2D plugin
      3. physicsProps plugin
      4. transformAroundCenter plugin
      5. transformAroundPoint plugin
      6. dynamicProp plugin

      10. access to Beta classes, currently
        1. DistortedView (Take any DisplayObject and move/drag its corners around any which way. Completely scriptable and tweenable. AS3)
        2. SmoothImageLoader (load external images and turn on smoothing and fit them into any rectangle you want) (AS2 & AS3)

How to Install

http://blog.greensock.com/get-started-tweening/

this covers install and tweening basics. Although you install the com folder, don't forget about the example FLA's and code writing widgets in the other folders

Tween Visualizing widgets

these let you see a tween by clicking a few buttons and generate the code for you to copy and paste. A great way to get familiar with all of the options

  1. Tween visualizers

      2. plugin explorer

Don't miss the TweenLite video tutorial!

this covers all the basics of TimelineLite, you will wonder how you lived without it

Transform Manager

This is a set of classes to put handles on movie clips that allow the user interactive rotation, scaling etc, just like the transform tool in the Flash IDE.

This is not a free tool, it is $299 (15% discount for Club Greensock members). That may seem like a lot, but if you need its functions for a project, its a bargain

Sample files from the presentation

More to come!

Simple tween with TweenMax, lots of extra info in the comments

3d video flip effect, originally by Grant Skinner. The link page has a link to his video tutorial.

Using the DynamicPropsPlugin to alter property target values while the tween is running. This is in answer to a question during the presentation.

Business card 3d flip effect, a very nice smooth effct similar to video flip but more complex.

Black and White to Color interactive photo effect. Mouse rollover changes images from B&W to color.

Basic draw with Tweenmax, draw lines hard or soft and erase , gives a really smooth drawing movement.
